Your Google Business profile is the first place a new customer lands, long before they ever set foot in your business. The problem is that most small businesses fill it out once, when they first set up, and then forget about it completely.
The result? Google treats you as an inactive profile, and customers skip right past you to the competitor next door, who at least looks like they actually exist.
We've gone through dozens of local business profiles across Romania, and the same five mistakes show up almost every time, regardless of industry. The good news: none of them cost a single leu to fix. The even better news: if you fix them today, you can see the difference within a few weeks.
A concrete example: three plumbers, one phone call
Imagine you have a bathroom emergency and you search Google for "plumber" plus your city's name. Three results come up:
- The first has its category listed as "Miscellaneous services," no photos, and its last review from two years ago.
- The second has its hours set to 9 AM - 5 PM, but you're calling at 7 PM because the profile was never updated with the real hours, so it looks like they've gone out of business.
- The third has clear photos of the work van and the team, recent reviews they've actually replied to, and the correct category right under the name: "Plumber."
Who do you call? Exactly. Not necessarily because the third one is the most skilled plumber in town, but because their profile doesn't give you any reason to doubt them.
The 5 mistakes sabotaging your profile right now
Mistake 1: You choose a category that's too generic or wrong
If you run a tailoring shop, don't list "Services," list "Tailor" or "Clothing Alterations Shop." Google uses your main category to decide which searches you show up in, so a vague category knocks you straight out of the running for your customers' best search queries.
Mistake 2: Your name, address, and phone number (NAP) don't match your website
If your website says "12 Mihai Eminescu St." and your profile says "M. Eminescu St. no. 12, 1st floor," Google can read those as two different addresses. Inconsistencies like this, however small they seem to you, make it harder for Google to clearly associate you with a single location, and they lower its confidence in your profile.
Mistake 3: You have few photos, old ones, or randomly taken ones
A profile with 2 blurry photos from 2022 signals abandonment, even if your business is doing great. Recent photos, even ones taken on your phone, showing your products or space from good angles, are usually the first thing a customer sees before deciding whether to call you.
Mistake 4: You ignore reviews, especially the negative ones
A profile with no reviews, or with reviews you've never replied to, raises questions instead of putting people at ease. You don't need to convince everyone, you just need to show that someone actually reads what's written about your business and responds professionally.
Mistake 5: The profile is completely abandoned, with no updates
No posts, no updated holiday hours, no activity at all for months. To Google, a profile that never moves is a signal that the business might not even exist anymore, and that can knock you out of local results right when you need customers the most.
Why do you avoid fixing this, even though it seems simple?
Many business owners avoid touching their profile because they're afraid that changing something will break what's already working. The truth is exactly the opposite: an incomplete or outdated profile isn't "already working," you just don't notice how much you're losing through it every week.
You don't need technical knowledge to fix the five mistakes above. You just need about 30 free minutes and a bit of attention to detail.
How much does it cost to fix all this?
The good news: exactly zero lei. All the changes above are made directly from your Google Business account, for free, with no subscription. The real investment is your time and, perhaps, a phone with a slightly better camera for new photos.
